Beer run, Mardis Gras bash in Bay Shore raises over 5K for charity

They ran through Bay Shore in the rain and partied at the Great South Bay Brewery.

And when the streets had tried and after any spilled beer was mopped up, the runners and revelers helped raise $5,000 at Feb. 11’s Mardi Gras Run to the Great South Bay Brewery.

The race organizers, the Greater Long Island Running Club, donated that money to two local nonprofits last week at the brewery.

“We raised money and it was a great race; it was a tremendous success. We had over 1,200 people that registered and over 1,000 that ran the race … It rained, and at times it poured, said Running Club race director Ric DiVeglio. “But the runners were happy, and it was quite a party.”

$2,500 went to the Morgan Center for Preschool Age Children with Cancer, which was the first of its kind in the country and is now in its 15th year, said Rod Zuch, who co-founded the Morgan Center with his wife, Nancy.

The other $2,500 was donated to the Bay Shore Athletics Sponsors.

 

“We bridge the gaps between our student athletes and the teams,” whether those teams are looking for help to send kids to camps, or trips to non-league games, explained Charlie Flood, the group’s president.  “So things like this help. We can send 5, 6 kids to a camp that can’t afford it.”

DiVeglio said the race was about a year in the making.

“The support and hospitality at the brewery has been just wonderful,” he added.
