Photos & Video: Dia de los Muertos altar box reception in Bay Shore

|

Bay Shore’s historic Second Avenue Firehouse played host to a celebration of art, music and the dead Friday night for a Dia de Los Muertos gallery reception.

The altar box exhibit borrows from the traditions of the Dia de los Muertos holiday, which is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries each year on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.

Vicki Ragan, the curator, has also put her personal collection of Mexican folk art on display in the restored firehouse.

The Skeleton Band performed Friday night (video above). The trio includes Eddie Barbash (Ragan’s son), on saxophone, Sam Reider on accordion and Roy Williams on guitar. Barbash is a member of Jon Batiste & Stay Human of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Below are photos of the reception, followed by six examples of the altar boxes now on exhibit.

They were all created by Long Island artists. Photos & video by Susan Barbash.

The exhibit is now open for viewing at the firehouse, located at 17 Second Avenue in Bay Shore, on Nov. 5, 6, 12 and 13, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
