Cops say no criminality is suspected after Wednesday’s rush hour incident, which delayed the train 99 minutes
A 45-year-old Riverhead man was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train near the Sayville train station Wednesday evening, MTA officials confirmed.
The Long Island Rail Road train — running from Hunterspoint Avenue to Montauk and carrying more than 600 passengers — struck the man just east of the Sayville station about 6:15 p.m., MTA Police said. He was not authorized to be on the tracks, police said.
The train’s crew and passengers were not injured. The Suffolk County Police Department pronounced the Riverhead man at the scene at 6:24 p.m.
A preliminary investigation, which included a review of video footage and witness statements, found no criminality, MTA cops said. The investigation remains ongoing.
Suffolk Police and the Bayport Fire Department assisted MTAPD at the scene.
The incident train continued east to its final destination, making all scheduled stops after a 99-minute delay, train officials said.
Greater Long Island is not including the identity of the deceased given the nature of his death.
