Construction crews have broken ground at the site of the future Whole Foods Market in Mount Sinai.
Heavy equipment was spotted excavating and moving earth around the property at 5499 Nesconset Highway this week, as work continues on the shopping center’s redevelopment.
Regency Centers announced in February that it had acquired the Mount Sinai Shopping Center and renamed it Crystal Brook Corner. A “Coming Soon Whole Foods Market ” sign has also gone up at the site, confirming the grocery chain’s plans to anchor the redeveloped plaza.
Work is expected to continue at the site throughout the remainder of the summer.
The Jacksonville, Florida-based real estate investment trust said the transformative project will include updated façades, parking lot improvements, and a broader re-merchandising strategy aimed at modernizing the retail space along the high-traffic NY-347/25A corridor near Port Jefferson. Brookhaven Town approved the site plan for the overhaul in December.

Whole Foods will become the plaza’s anchor tenant and mark the grocery chain’s ninth Long Island location. Whole Foods opened its eighth Long Island location in March, in Bohemia at the Shops at SunVet on Sunrise Highway.
The Mount Sinai space has sat largely vacant since King Kullen closed there in June 2019. Regency’s announcement in February came just days after Amazon, which owns Whole Foods, shuttered its two remaining Amazon Fresh stores on Long Island, including a location in nearby East Setauket.
No official opening date has been announced.
