Manhattan triathlete and wellness entrepreneur drowns off Pridwin Hotel dock on Shelter Island

A Manhattan dad who competed for Team USA at the Triathlon World Championships and later built a career coaching athletes drowned Wednesday after going for a morning swim off the dock at the Pridwin Hotel on Shelter Island.

Spencer M. Korwin, 38, entered the water about 8 a.m. off the hotel’s dock, where he was staying with his family, according to Shelter Island Police Det. Sgt. Jack Thilberg. Several outlets have since identified the Pridwin as the hotel, though police have not confirmed the name themselves.

When Korwin failed to return, his wife alerted hotel staff, who contacted emergency services. Shelter Island Town Police, the Shelter Island Fire Department and Shelter Island Town EMS responded to the report of a missing swimmer shortly after noon and launched an extensive search, involving police helicopters and multiple marine units, of the Crescent Beach-North Channel area of Shelter Island Sound.

Divers located Korwin, a father of two young girls, about 3 p.m. underwater, near the same dock from where he had entered the water about seven hours earlier, said police. Authorities determined he had drowned.

Thilberg said investigators, working with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, believe the death was accidental and that no criminality is suspected. But cops said the case remains active and that the medical examiner will determine the official cause and of death.

Korwin was a familiar face in Long Island’s endurance-sports circuit. He posted first-place finishes at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Triathlon and the Mighty Montauk Sprint Triathlon, according to his LinkedIn profile.

In 2012, he qualified for Team USA Triathlon in 2012 and competing at the World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. He described himself professionally as someone who spent his days helping athletes and everyday clients “achieve goals that once seemed out of reach” through better sleep, diet and life balance.

A 2010 graduate of Syracuse University, Korwin founded Korwin Health & Wellness in 2021.

Korwin’s grandfather was Irving Korwin, a World War II veteran and founder of Wideband Coin Jewelry. He died in 2020 in Arizona.
