Syosset, Jericho and Manhasset lead the way as New York City schools take most of the top spots statewide
Nassau County placed 20 schools in New York’s top 100 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings, released Tuesday.
Ten Nassau schools made the state’s top 100 for elementary schools, and 10 more landed in the top 100 for middle schools.
New York City public schools dominated both lists. They took 83 of the top 100 elementary spots and 78 of the top 100 middle-school spots. That left 17 elementary spots and 22 middle-school spots for the rest of the state, and Nassau schools claimed 10 of each.
Lakeville Elementary School in the Great Neck school district was Nassau’s highest-ranked elementary school at No. 35 statewide. Manhasset Middle School led the county’s middle schools at No. 39.
Syosset Central School District had the strongest showing of any Nassau district. It placed five schools in the top 100: three elementary schools and two middle schools. Willits Elementary School made the biggest jump, rising from No. 183 last year to No. 40.
Jericho and Manhasset each placed three schools in the top 100. Great Neck and North Shore each placed two.
The Academy Charter School in Hempstead finished No. 88 on the middle schools list. It was the only charter school from Nassau in either top 100.
Nassau’s totals were down from last year. Nineteen of the county’s elementary schools and 15 of its middle schools made the state’s top 100 in the 2026 rankings.
This year U.S. News added data collected directly from state education agencies, so part of the movement may reflect that change.
The rankings cover about 46,000 public elementary schools and more than 24,000 middle schools nationwide. Schools are ranked within their states and their districts.
The rankings measure student performance in math and reading/language arts, weighed against student background. Student-teacher ratios are used to break ties.
“By incorporating direct state data across all proficiency levels, the 2027 rankings offer a richer, more complete picture of how elementary and middle schools are driving student growth,” said Eric Brooks, U.S. News director of education data analysis.
