The Montauk Highway store is a summer magnet for beachgoers

Someone walked out of one of the most famous convenience stores in the country this week with a lot more than a Slurpee and a medium House Blend coffee.

A third-prize Powerball ticket worth $200,000 was sold at the 7-Eleven at 653 Montauk Highway in Montauk for the Monday, Oct. 19 drawing, New York Lottery officials announced Tuesday.

The ticket matched four of the five white balls plus the Powerball. That prize is regularly worth $50,000, but the player added the Power Play option and the 4X multiplier quadrupled the prize.

The winning numbers were 08-31-32-42-48, with a Powerball of 23. The lucky winner has not been identified.

The store is no ordinary roadside stop. In 2014, Dallas-based 7-Eleven Inc. named the Montauk location the highest-grossing 7-Eleven in the United States. That same year, the company reorted that eight of its top 10 U.S. stores by sales operated in Suffolk County.

Business at the shop hits a lull every year and the calendar pushes deeper into the fall, and then winter months. But like clockwork it swells every summer with beachgoers, surfers and weekenders.

It stocks beach chairs, boogie boards and sunblock alongside the coffee, hot treats and slushy drinks. Traffic got so heavy in 2012 that the store’s entrances along Montauk Highway were converted to one way in and one way out.

This time, the store delivered a big payday deep into October, well after the summer crowds said sayonara and headed west until Memorial Day.

Powerball’s winning numbers are drawn from a field of 1 to 69, and the Powerball comes from a separate field of 1 to 26. The Power Play option, available for an extra charge, can multiply non-jackpot wins up to 10 times.

Powerball drawings are televised Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights at 10:59 p.m.
