Locals have taken to social media to rave about Argyle Theatre’s newest production, “Hairspray.”

“Opening night at Hairspray was FANTASTIC!” wrote Facebook user Susan Palazzolo.

“Great cast, set, sounds, stage, music, lighting all enjoyable in a clean and comfortable air-conditioned new theater. Wonderful show, wonderful evening!”

The show premiered July 12 in Babylon Village and runs until Aug. 26. It will be the longest-running production ever for Argyle Theatre, with over 40 shows.

The owners behind the new venue immediately began prepping for Hairspray following the finale of “Guys and Dolls.”

“We transformed the whole stage, wall-to-wall, into 1960s Baltimore,” said the theatre’s co-owner Dylan Perlman.

the plot

Hairspray, a Tony-award-winning play, is based in Baltimore, Md., in the 1960s, and revolves around a teenage girl who dreams of dancing on the on The Corny Collins Show.

After getting detention in school with African-American students, she is taught smooth dance moves, which later helps her rise to fame.

“We saw Hairspray as a show that can appeal to everyone,” said Perlman. “It family friendly, it’s diverse, it’s a perfect summer show.”
