It’s October meaning it’s time for some fun-filled fall activities.
One of the busiest days of the year in Babylon Village is its annual Fall Harvest and Street Fair, which happens on the same day as the popular Post Office’s Race for MPS.
This year both events are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19. Scroll down to learn more about each activity.
Fall Harvest and Street Fair
The 27th annual fair runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., up and down Deer Park Avenue — from Lily Flanagans to Main Street.
The event, sponsored by the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce, focuses on supporting its local vendors.
“We don’t bring in any outside vendors for this fair so we can really highlight and showcase our own businesses,” said Kelly Peckholdt, the head of the chamber.
With the streets being closed, restaurants will be setting up for outside dining, while bands will be positioned on the north and south ends of the festival for live entertainment.
Positions Dance Studio will be having live dance performances midday at both ends of the festival, as well.
For the fall fun, there will be a petting zoo and pony rides at the street fair.
The Conklin House will also be running its Apples and Arts Festival that day from noon to 4 p.m.
Post Office’s Race for MPS
The Post Office Cafe will be hosting its 28th annual 5K and 1K walk/run on the morning of Fall Harvest.
Same day race registration begins at 8 a.m., with the 1K fun run starting at 9:30 a.m. The 5K begins at 10 a.m.
The race, which takes runners through the village to the docks and back, aims to find a cure for MPS, or Mucopolysaccharidoses — an often fatal genetic disease in children which prevents the production of specific enzymes that help strengthen the body.
The disease is close to the hearts owners of the Babylon restaurant.
“It has been a very personal race for me,” said Mark Lessing, of the Post Office, who had two children, Mark and Casey, diagnosed with the disorder. They were a year apart in age. Mark passed on Nov. 1, 2010, at 20 years old. Casey died on July 4, 2016, at 24 years old.
To continue their memory, Lessing and the Post Office staffers and others from Lessing’s Hospitality Group put a big efforts into creating a fun-filled, neighborly race.
On Friday night, the day before the event, there is a pre-race party from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., where runs pick up their t-shirts and race numbers, while getting the chance to enjoy a complimentary buffet and drink.
There’s also fun that follows the race back at the restaurant.
