The “thousand-year” storm that walloped Suffolk County early Monday dumped historic amounts of rain across the region, flooding roads, homes, schools and businesses.
None got it worse than the communities along the North Shore between Smithtown and Rocky Point. The historic deluge dropped 10.18 inches of rain on Sound Beach, the most of any community, according to the National Weather Service.
Miller Place saw 9.84 inches, while Port Jefferson Station recorded 9.83 inches and Stony Brook measured 9.55 inches. This storm’s unprecedented rain has been classified as an event that would statistically occur only once every thousand years, according to numerous reports.
Hurricane Ernesto is not responsible for the torrential rain. It was part of a slow-moving summer cold front producing thunderstorms.
