Joe Carpenter, the husband of Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, died on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Rockville Centre. He was 81.
Known for his commitment to family and community and a strong work ethic, the West Islip man co-founded and operated AC Type & Printing with his wife for many years. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Carpenter began his career as a land surveyor before embarking on the family business.
Over the years, he also became known for his volunteer work, particularly with local youth sports, according to his obituary. He coached little league baseball, youth football and served as a Boy Scout volunteer. Many people in the community remember how he spent his Sunday mornings, lining the fields in preparation of the games taking place that day.
A soft-spoken man with a warm heart and a great sense of humor, he faced the challenges of his final years with resilience and grace, inspiring those around him with his courage and unwavering strength, his obituary said.
In addition to his wife, Carpenter is survived by his children, Richard and Robert; his brother, James; his grandchildren, Sydney and Joe; and many nieces and nephews.
