Rescuers safely pulled a kayaker from waters near Shinnecock Canal on Sunday after she had become stranded on a sandbar in rough sea conditions, Southampton Town Police said.

Cops received a 911 call about 4:30 p.m. from the kayaker, who reported being stranded in Great Peconic Bay, about 500 feet northeast of the canal. The kayaker jumped into the water after calling for help, police said.

The town’s Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene.

Marine Patrol officers located the kayaker in the water and pulled her aboard a boat. The Coast Guard meanwhile recovered her kayak.

Authorities said a Marine Patrol officer suffered a leg injury during the rescue due to the rough sea conditions. The officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The kayaker was taken to Meschutt County Park, where Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance responders treated her for hypothermia.
