Each day, an average of 17 U.S. veterans die by suicide, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
But in Calverton, one Long Island nonprofit is fighting that statistic — not with medicine, but with horses.
Warrior Ranch Foundation provides equine-assisted therapy to veterans, first responders, and horses in need of a second chance. Through human–horse interaction, participants rediscover trust, connection, and healing in a peaceful, judgment-free space.
Founder and president Eileen Shanahan says the mission comes from the heart.
“I love my country. I love horses. It’s really that simple,” she said.
