Long Islanders teamed up and packaged almost 70,000 meals for the less fortunate this past Saturday. On Feb. 3, Babylon Rotary, Babylon Lion’s Club, Bay Shore Rotary, among other groups, worked alongside one other for an event called Babylon-Bay Shore Ends Hunger.
About 14,000 meals will soon be sent down to Puerto Rico via the U.S. Coast Guard and Long Island Cares. The remaining 56,000 will be distributed to 17 local food pantries.
“The event was a huge success,” said organizer and past president of the Babylon Rotary, Megan Noble.
Noble started the event back in 2016, when it was Babylon Ends Hunger.
It has grown ever since.
“The first event we did we packaged 30,000 meals, our second event this past November we packaged 60,000 meals,” Noble previously told GreaterBabylon.
Now after its third installment, more than 158,000 meals have been packaged for the nonprofit Outreach Program, which supplies the food that needs packaging.
This year, 370-plus volunteers from across Long Island — including Babylon mayor Ralph Scordino — packed into the Presbyterian Church on 79 East Main Street ot help.
“This is what it’s all about in Babylon Village,” the mayor told Newsday. “Everybody helping out.”
