The Town of Babylon rolled out new measures to help alleviate traffic difficulties at its ocean beaches.
On July 12, the Robert Moses bridge was jammed up after the state and town beaches in the area reached its capacity limit at 50%.
What ensued was bumper-to-bumper traffic, with some individuals illegally parking on Ocean Parkway and hopping fences to the beach.
“The Town Board and I are fully aware of the traffic difficulties on Ocean Parkway that occurred this past weekend (July 12),” said Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “We are coordinating with our partners in both the New York State Parks and Police departments to remediate these issues, and strictly enforce the no-parking mandate on Ocean Parkway.”
This means beefing up patrols with tow trucks and flatbeds.
“Those who park illegally along Ocean Parkway (all non-emergency stopping is illegal) will be subject to fines and towing as part of a joint enforcement effort by the Town of Babylon and New York State Police,” reads a statement from the town.
The town, which posts real-time beach capacity updates on Facebook, is working with the state to make sure its electronic signs along popular beach routes are accurate.
