Smith Point County Park

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on Thursday sent a plan to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo that could have beachgoers returning to Smith Point County Park in Shirley on Memorial Day.

The plan, first reported by Newsday, would also open Cupsogue Beach County Park on the same day and the remaining beaches during the third week of June.

According to the plan, visitors would be required to wear a mask on boardwalks, stairways, restrooms, concessions and other public areas, but not on the beach or in the water.

Beach visitors who have been exposed to COVID or showing symptoms would be encouraged to keep 6 feet apart from other guests.

Lifeguards also would undergo special training related to saving swimmers, including using.

The document states lifeguards will undergo special training related to executing saves (including using water-compatible masks, etc.), and the county will hire additional public safety or other personnel to be stationed at all entry and exit points, as well as on beaches, for compliance with applicable public health and safety rules and guidelines.

Each beach will employ a bathroom attendant to ensure compliance with applicable public health and safety rules and guidelines, the plan states.

The use of playgrounds, basketball and handball courts will be prohibited for the 2020 season.
