County Executive Steve Bellone attended the Pattersquash Creek Civic Organization earlier this week to sign legislation aimed at protecting flood-prone property in a designated conservation zone area within Shirley and Mastic by creating more open space.
The new law, sponsored by County Legis. Rudy Sunderman, calls for the county to preserve property that it would have previously put up for auction due to failure to pay tax liens.
“It’s an important piece of environmental legislation” and important for the community, Bellone said at the March 4 civic meeting, which was held at the Mastic Beach Fire House and attended by about 40 people.
Sunderman said the new law was the result of feedback from the civic association.
“This is a great step forward for the Tri-Hamlet community,” Sunderman said. “Superstorm Sandy devastated our area and this resolution will help to alleviate these problems in the future.”
