A newlywed Massapequa woman’s battle with breast cancer has sparked an outpouring of community support, with a GoFundMe campaign raising over $36,000 in just three days.
Darielle DeViccaro, a 32-year-old licensed esthetician and special effects makeup artist, was recently diagnosed with the disease, just months after marrying a New York City police officer in September.
DeViccaro — the kind of person who wears shirts that say, “If you’re reading this, have a great day” — has long been known for her generosity and selflessness. In 2014, she made the life-saving decision to donate a kidney to her brother.
Today, as she stares down an unexpected and difficult battle, her friends, family and the wider community are stepping up to help.
Because of the severity of her diagnosis and the ongoing treatment plan, she is unable to work, tacking on financial strain to an already difficult stretch, explained her Matias Ferreira, who organized the fundraiser to support his “incredible friends,” DeViccaro and her husband, Justin Senese.
“[DeViccaro] has always gone above and beyond for those around her,” he wrote in the campaign description, noting that even in the face of adversity, she remains strong and determined. “Despite these challenges, Darielle’s strength, kindness, and resilience remain at the core of who she is.”
Documenting a courageous battle

DeViccaro has been documenting her journey on Instagram, sharing both the hardships and moments of levity as she navigates treatment.
In one particularly moving moment, she posted a video of her husband playfully spoon-feeding her yogurt during an early chemotherapy session in late January. The lighthearted yogurt moment showcases is one of a number of Instagram posts that showcase their loving relationship.
In an Instagram post documenting her first chemotherapy treatment, she pays tribute to her husband and shows her determined attitude toward her illness.
“First chemotherapy & cold cap therapy in the books with the incredible support of my hubby by my side ♥️,” she wrote in the Jan. 8 post. “Ready to kick the shit out of this thing! 💪🏽“
