County heads wager BBQ and pizza on Islanders vs. Hurricanes playoff matchup

|

The 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs are in full swing, and the New York Islanders are set to face off against the Carolina Hurricanes in what promises to be an epic first-round matchup. But it’s not just the players who are vying for a win.

The county heads where both teams reside are also getting in on the action, with some friendly trash talk and wagers to sweeten the deal.

Wake County Manager David Ellis started the challenge, offering Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman some delicious Carolina BBQ and Cheerwine if the Islanders emerge victorious in the best-of-seven series.

But Blakeman wasn’t about to back down from a challenge. He put up some top-notch pizza from King Umberto’s in Elmont if the Islanders fall short.

“Dave Ellis, you are never going to taste this pizza unless you come to New York, because the Islanders are going to win,” said Blakeman in a video response.

The stage is set for the showdown, with Game 1 taking place tonight at 7 p.m. in Raleigh’s PNC Arena. The rest of the series schedule is below.
