Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy may have found his favorite Long Island slice yet.
During a recent stop in Copiague, Portnoy visited Nico’s Charred Pies and delivered an impressive 8.2 rating in his trademark “One Bite” pizza review.
Portnoy, who scores pies out of 10 based on a single bite, has often been critical of Long Island pizza — making his reaction in Copiague particularly interesting.
The score alone may not been the most notable part of the visit.
“Best in Long Island. Best in Long Island. Period,” Portnoy declared during the review — a major endorsement from someone who has often criticized the region’s pizza scene.
Normally, we’d forgive the “in Long Island” phrasing given he’s not from around here, but after as many pizza stops and reviews across Long Island as he’s done over the years, you’d think the local phrasing would’ve stuck by now.
During his Nico’s review, Portnoy openly acknowledged that he has not always been kind to Long Island pizza.
“I’ve sat here and I’ve p***** on Long Island pizza,” he said. “I don’t like Long Island pizza. I think it’s overhyped. Not great.”
Portnoy said he was surprised he had never heard of the shop before, adding that nobody had previously recommended it to him. Once he opened the box, however, his tone quickly changed as he praised the appearance of the pie and the restaurant’s signature char.
A crunchy ‘8.2’

“Eight-two,” he said after crunching down on his first bite of a Nico’s round pie. “I mean, I guess if you have charred in your name and you live up to the char.”
Portnoy, dressed head to toe in attire from his alma mater University of Michigan, also sampled a slice from the restaurant’s Sicilian square pie, but said he preferred the round pie.
The Barstool king’s visit included a bonus review of the shop’s chocolate chip cookie. Portnoy gave that even high praise, calling it a “spectacular cookie” and scoring it a 9.1.
