East Hampton police aren’t waiting for trouble this Halloween.
Detectives are making surprise visits to sex offenders’ homes ahead of Halloween and through Saturday night to make sure they’re following state and local laws — including not giving out candy and not decorating their homes.
Police also shared a dozen tips for keep kids safe on Halloween.
The operation kicked off early on Friday. Police said the effort is about protecting children as families fill the streets for trick-or-treating.
Here’s what police want parents to know before the kids head out:
- Map out a safe route ahead of time and set a time limit.
- Kids should go in groups, and parents should go with young children.
- Older kids should go with friends and tell parents their route. They should stop only at familiar homes with the outside lights on.
- Go out while it’s still light if possible. After dark, carry a flashlight, put reflective tape on costumes and bags, and stick to well-lit streets.
- Never go inside anyone’s home.
- Never accept a ride from a stranger. Children should stay away from all vehicles, whether someone is in them or not.
- Keep a safe distance from moving cars.
- Cross only at corners. Never cross between parked cars or diagonally across an intersection.
- Look both ways, obey traffic signals, walk instead of running, and use sidewalks.
- Skip shortcuts through backyards, alleys and parks.
- Parents should check all treats before kids eat them, and throw out anything homemade or unwrapped.
- Teach children how to call 911 in an emergency.
