It was a picture-perfect homecoming for East Islip High School last weekend, kicking off with a red-tide parade that swept down Main Street from the Bank of America to the fire department.
Marchers from the high school’s clubs, honor societies, band and athletic teams, together with participants in local youth organizations, grinned and glided their way past cheering families and neighbors lining the route, painting the morning in school colors and small-town pride.
The main event came later, as the football team’s showdown against Smithtown East quickly turned into a demolition derby.
East Islip’s undefeated varsity squad unleashed a punishing ground game, building a commanding 34-7 halftime lead. East Islip piled on 27 more points in the second half for a lopsided 61-21 victory, with Jake Simmons rushing for 231 yards and three touchdowns. Will Gonzalez and Andrew Arena added 76 and 59 yards respectively, each scoring a touchdown.
The halftime show delivered its own spectacle, as cheer and kickline teams lit up the field with high-energy routines that earned thunderous applause. Brooke Andresen and Sage Lyons were crowned homecoming royalty.
Spirit in motion
The day’s festivities captured the bonds and traditions that define the East Islip community, from parade route to victory celebration.
