Hilton Spokony had just gotten off work Thursday night and was on his way home with his mother-in-law when tragedy struck in North Patchogue.
The 45-year-old East Patchogue resident was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Waverly Avenue and Buckley Road, according to Suffolk County police. On Friday, his wife, Nisa K. Hill-Spokony, shared an emotional account of the moments after she learned her husband had died.
“I really don’t know what to say, so I’m just going to write as best as I can,” she wrote on Facebook.
Hill-Spokony said her mother, Meredith Corchnoy-Hill, 79, had picked up her husband from work about 10 p.m., and the pair were heading home when the crash occurred.
“Finally got a call from NYU Langone Health [in Patchogue] that my mom and husband got in a car accident,” she wrote. “Mom is fine bruised up, but fine as she can be, but my husband didn’t make it.”
Police said Hill of East Patchogue was driving a 2023 Kia Forte southbound on Waverly Avenue and trying to turn left onto Buckley Road when the vehicle collided with a northbound 2016 Dodge Ram about 10:10 p.m.
Hill was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Spokony went to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Dodge, Michael Aulivola, 55, of Holtsville was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
Major Case Unit detectives are continuing to investigate the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 631.852.6555.
