The fundraiser was organized to help cover funeral costs for Matthew Schneider, who died in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday
Long Islanders are rallying behind the family of a young Selden man killed in a single-vehicle crash in Holbrook on Tuesday, flooding a GoFundMe campaign with donations within hours of it going live.
Matthew Schneider, 26, died early Tuesday when his 2018 Chevrolet Express left Express Drive South near Maple Avenue, struck a tree and overturned about 3:10 a.m., police said. He died at the scene.
Stony Brook resident Katie Damico set up the fundraiser, titled “Help Us Give Matthew The Goodbye He Deserves,” to help Schneider’s family cover funeral and service costs.
“Matthew was a deeply loved son, family member, and friend,” Damico wrote on the fundraiser page, adding that loved ones are struggling to make sense of losing someone so young and full of promise.
Donations have poured in swiftly, with more than 160 gifts logged within hours of the page going live.
Suffolk Police Sixth Squad detectives are investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call 631.854.8652.
