Islanders fans can’t stop talking hockey these days, and it has nothing to do with a blockbuster trade or free agent signing.
The team’s unprecedented fan-driven third jersey design contest has already generated more than 37,000 submissions since launching Wednesday, sparking a wave of creativity that has spread from social media feeds to workplaces across Long Island.
“The jersey contest was the talk of the office today,” Shawn Stein of Bellmore told Greater Long Island. “I can’t remember the last time the Isles were the subject of conversation this much at work.”
From lighthouse-inspired concepts and Islanders logos tucked inside anchors to reimagined Fisherman designs and more playful ideas — including one featuring a shark taking a bite out of the Fisherman — fans have flooded X, Instagram and TikTok with their visions for what could become the club’s next third jersey.
The enthusiasm has even caught the attention of one of the Islanders’ biggest rivals.
The New Jersey Devils joined the fun on social media, posting a mock Islanders jersey decorated with fish sticks.
For Rob Taub of Freeport, entering the contest was an opportunity to blend creativity with team pride. His design features an orange jersey with the letters “NY” across the front, with the “Y” doubling as a hockey stick.
“I think the jersey contest is a brilliant idea,” Taub said. “Giving fans and others a chance to show their creativity also is a breath of fresh air.”
Taub said he hopes the winning design pays tribute to one of the franchise’s most popular alternate looks.
“I am hoping the winner is an orange jersey because of how much fans have loved it for all these years,” he said.
The contest marks the first time an NHL franchise has invited fans to design an official on-ice jersey.
Fans have until July 24 to submit their designs online. The team will then select five finalists before fans choose the winner through a public vote in August.
The winning design will become the Islanders’ official third jersey for the 2027-28 season.
