A 57-year-old Southampton man crashed his boat into a jetty in Sag Harbor Bay late Monday, seriously injuring two passengers, then left the scene without reporting it, police said.
Peter Mangiameli faces a bevy of criminal charges, including second- and third-degree assault and failing to report a personal injury accident. State police said he was operating a 35-foot cruise boat with eight passengers aboard when the vessel struck a stone jetty about 10:07 p.m.
Two passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries, including a broken rib, a leg fracture, and a vertebrae fracture, police said. Further, the wreck caused significant damage to the boat, according to authorities.
After the crash, Mangiameli docked the boat at a nearby dock, where Sag Harbor Village Police officers responded and treated the injured passengers. But cops said Mangiameli left the scene while the victims were still receiving medical attention.
The Sag Harbor Village Police Department called in the state police to assist, and the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation ultimately took over the case and tracked down and arrested Mangiameli.
The boat operator is additionally charged with failing to provide ID after a personal injury accident, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless operation of a vessel, and multiple violations of state navigation law, state cops said.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information is asked to call state police at 631.756.3300.
