It’s poetry once a month at Jack Jack’s Coffee in Babylon

|

Did you know locals have the chance to test out their poetry skills once a month at Jack Jack’s Coffee House in Babylon?

The poetry nights, sponsored by the Babylon Village Arts Council, are held the first Thursday of each month and are run by Tom Stock, who has been a poet for the last 40 years.

“It’s a special event to make new friends,” said Stock.

The event has been running at Jack Jack’s for the last 15 months.

“I asked Jack Jack’s when they were opening if they would like to add poetry and they said, ‘Certainly; we love cultural events,'” said Stock.

Jack Jack’s is located 223 Deer Park Avenue in the village. The poetry night starts at 7:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.

Each monthly session begins with a featured poet, and that performance is followed by an open mic.

“It’s an opportunity for people to get up in a spotlight and read their poem and get feedback,” said Stock.

“It’s been great,” said Rose Norman, president of the Arts Council. “A lot of people come, it’s all local poets.”

The next poetry night at Jack Jack’s is Thursday, Aug. 3, and will feature poet Mark Wells.

“[Wells] is a well-known poet for at least 15-20 years,” said Stock. “He goes around from various poetry events and makes a great contribution.”
