King Kullen in Middle Island last day in business is Wednesday. The supermarket will permanently on Thursday, marking the end of an era for the long-standing grocer on Middle Country Road.
The store’s closure comes amidst a wave of King Kullen shutdowns in recent years, as the once-dominant Long Island chain continues to downsize its footprint.
“King Kullen has closed many stores over the last few years — our Middle Island location lasted far longer than expected,” reads a statement from the Middle Island Civic Association. “It was going to become a Stop & Shop a few years back until that deal fell through.”
The civic group noted that the landlord for the shopping center is actively seeking a new supermarket tenant to fill the void.
As previously reported by Greater Long Island, a trio of grocers — including Meat Farms and Uncle Giuseppe’s — had expressed interest in the site earlier this year. It’s unclear if any of those discussions remain ongoing.
