Bryan Mizhirumbay ran a red light in Freeport and slammed into Craig White, 55, who was driving home from work
A Lindenhurst man will spend up to 15 years in prison for barreling drunk through a Freeport red light at speeds as high as 106 mph and killing a 55-year-old man driving home from work.
Judge Caryn Fink sentenced Bryan Mizhirumbay, 24, to 7 to 15 years behind bars on Monday, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced. Prosecutors had sought a term of 7 to 18 years.
Mizhirumbay pleaded guilty Aug. 12 to aggravated vehicular homicide, second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and aggravated driving while intoxicated.
His victim, Craig White, worked at AHRC Nassau, a Freeport-based nonprofit that serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“Craig White was a devoted father, friend, and beloved member of the AHRC Nassau community,” Donnelly said. “His life was violently stolen because of the selfish and reckless decisions of this defendant.”
Donnelly noted that White’s daughter recently got engaged.
“She will now sadly walk down the aisle without her father by her side,” she said.
The crash happened about 11:07 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2025. White was heading home from AHRC Nassau and driving north on South Long Beach Avenue through the intersection with Atlantic Avenue, prosecutors said.
Mizhirumbay was driving east on Atlantic Avenue, where the speed limit is 35 mph. His car’s event data recorder showed him going about 106 mph three seconds before the crash, prosecutors said.
He ran the red light and hit the driver’s side of White’s car at about 90 mph. He had braked off and on just before impact, according to the DA.
The crash pushed both cars northeast across the intersection and the westbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue. White’s car broke through a fence at Atlantic Nursery.
Rescuers found White unconscious and trapped behind the wheel. The force of the crash had pushed his driver’s seat into the passenger side of the car, authorities said.
White was rushed to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Mizhirumbay was treated at Nassau University Medical Center, where blood drawn an hour after the crash showed a blood alcohol content of 0.18%, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%, prosecutors said.
“Memories missed because of this defendant’s actions,” Donnelly said. “We continue to keep Craig’s family, friends, and colleagues in our thoughts.”
