Long Island Ducks’ almost-teammates Mahomes and Rocker to box in Barstool Sports bout

|

Nearly two decades after almost becoming teammates with the Long Island Ducks, retired relief pitchers John Rocker and Pat Mahomes Sr. will finally share the same stage — inside a boxing ring.

Rocker and Mahomes, who played for the Ducks in back-to-back seasons but never overlapped, are set to square off in a Barstool Sports “Rough N’ Rowdy” fight in Wheeling, West Virginia, on April 18.

The battle was set in motion after a wobbly Bourbon Street run-in during Super Bowl LIX weekend in New Orleans, when the two ex-rivals exchanged words and very nearly blows.

Within days of their Bourbon Street beef, the slender 6-foot-1 Mahomes and Rocker, a hulking 6-foot-4, signed the paperwork to square off in the ring this spring.

New Orleans stare down leads to Wheeling showdown

Rocker, a former Braves closer, became one of baseball’s most controversial figures during the height of the Mets-Braves rivalry during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. In a notorious 1999 Sports Illustrated interview, he unleashed a series of inflammatory comments about New York City and its residents, drawing widespread condemnation and a suspension from MLB.

Despite the controversy, Rocker notched 88 saves over a six-year major league career, including 38 for Atlanta during their 1999 National League pennant run. The Braves edged the Mets in the National League Championship Series that season, 4 games to 2.

Mahomes, who was in New Orleans to watch his son Patrick Mahomes Jr. and the Kansas City Chiefs play Philadelphia in Super Bowl LIX, came out the bullpen for the Mets in 1999 and 2000, posting a 4.47 ERA in 92 appearances. His time with the Mets coincided with some of the most heated battles between New York and Rocker’s Braves for NL East supremacy.

After their big-league days, both wound up on Long Island — Rocker struggled through a brief 23-game stint with the Ducks in 2005, posting a 6.50 ERA in what would be his final professional season, while Mahomes starred for the team the following year — just missing the chance to play together.

Now, they’ll finally go head-to-head.

Barstool’s Portnoy confirms fight

Barstool founder Dave Portnoy confirmed the fight in a social media post. The event, part of Barstool’s wildly entertaining Rough N’ Rowdy series, features ex-athletes, internet personalities and amateur brawlers.

Rocker chomping at the bit

Rocker’s X post speaks for itself. He’ll get his chance to follow through on April 18.

Mahomes has been more succinct in his appraisal of Rocker on social media.
