A Bellport man charged with killing a 30-year-old mother of three at a Yaphank gas station Saturday morning pleaded not guilty Sunday to second-degree murder.
Michael McHenry, 40, of Wisteria Circle, entered his plea at Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip, a day after authorities say the ex-convict who was freed from prison in March beat and stabbed his girlfriend Juliann Bachmann to death in front of witnesses, the New York Post reported.
Prosecutors told the court that McHenry beat Bachmann and left her to die at the Speedway on Horseblock Road as shocked bystanders watched, according to the report.
Police found Bachmann injured and unresponsive in a vehicle at the gas station about 7:25 a.m. Saturday. She was taken to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk in Patchogue, where she was pronounced dead.
McHenry, on parole since his prison release two months ago, was arrested at 8:13 p.m. Saturday — about 12 hours after the discovery.
McHenry stabbed Bachmann in the neck and chest, first attacking her inside her car before dragging her out and continuing the assault on the ground, a criminal complaint alleges, according to the Post’s report.
Property records indicate both McHenry and Bachmann lived at the same Wisteria Circle address in the Rosemont Brookhaven apartment complex off Woodside Avenue, less than a mile from where she was killed.
The Post reported that the two were romantically involved. Authorities have confirmed the two knew were in a relationship, the outlet reported.
McHenry is being held pending further court proceedings.
About 50 friends and relatives gathered at a Sunday evening vigil for Bachmann at the Speedway gas station, according to the Post.
