Nassau and Suffolk County community colleges earned high marks in New York, ranking third and eighth respectively in WalletHub’s “Best & Worst Community Colleges” report.
While both fell short of cracking the country’s top 100, Nassau and Suffolk each placed among the state’s top 10 community colleges.
WalletHub, in its annual study released on Tuesday, compared more than 650 two-year schools nationwide on cost, graduation rates, career outcomes and other factors.

On the national list, State Technical College of Missouri claimed the top spot. Nassau ranked 138th, while Suffolk was 196th.
Local standouts

Located in Garden City, Nassau Community College enrolls about 17,000 students. Annual in-county tuition is $6,330. Suffolk County Community College, with campuses in Selden, Brentwood and Riverhead, serves about 21,000 students. In-county tuition at Suffolk for the upcoming academic year is $6,050.
WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said “a good community college minimizes costs for students while also providing an enriching learning experience that leads to high student retention … and high graduation rates,” adding that the best schools also help students after graduation and recognize learning beyond the classroom.
WalletHub said it evaluated more than 650 community colleges across the country using 18 indicators across three dimensions: cost and financing, education outcomes, and career outcomes.
