Northern lights return to Long Island skies — with another chance tonight

|

Since 2024, Long Islanders have been treated to several rare displays of the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, thanks to a series of powerful solar storms.

Another geomagnetic storm late Tuesday night brought the colorful spectacle back once again — and a few lucky night owls caught it on camera. GLI photographer Angela Sasso captured these stunning photos from Lindenhurst between 11:25 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.

There’s a small chance for another light show tonight, according to News 12 meteorologist Rich Hoffman, though it might be tougher to spot.

“Energy not as strong tonight. It will be a close call,” Hoffman said on social media. “Best chance will be with camera. Matt Hammer will have an update starting at 5 p.m. Hoping clouds can clear by midnight.”
