Early risers were surprised with a special viewing of the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, in the northeast, including on Long Island.
“It wasn’t a huge chance, but my app kept going off most people didn’t know I was watching the meteor shower, and boom colors pop,” said Long Island photographer Angela Sasso, who captured the beautiful sight at 2:05 a.m. in Lindenhurst. See her photos below.
According to Space.com, heightened solar activity that coincided with the Perseid meteor shower allowed stargazers to see the sky lit up with vibrant colors.
This is the second time this year the Northern Lights were viewable on the Island. Back in May, lucky Long Islanders captured the moment the sky showed the green hue.
