A fast-growing halal food chain is looking to bring its bold flavors to downtown Patchogue.
Halal Munchies, a New York-based franchise known for its platters, burgers and late-night takeout, seeks approval from the Patchogue Village Planning Board to open a location at 57 South Ocean Avenue — the former home of Hot Bagels Plus, which closed abruptly in March 2024.
A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Tuesday night at the board’s regular meeting.
“It’s a good fit,” said Mayor Paul Pontieri, noting the rising popularity of halal cuisine and the importance of filling the empty storefront with a business that can serve the community. “We’re looking forward to seeing that space active again.”
The location would mark Halal Munchies’ sixth on Long Island, joining outposts in Central Islip, Huntington, Farmingdale, Mineola and Lynbrook.
The chain launched in 2020 and now boasts over 50 locations. Most are concentrated in New York City, but there are out-of-state locations in Connecticut, Virginia and Michigan.
Though it offers some similar flavors, Patchogue’s existing Middle Eastern-style restaurant, Mazza, operates as a sit-down experience, whereas Halal Munchies would focus on takeout service.

The South Ocean Avenue storefront had housed a bagel shop for more than three decades before Hot Bagels Plus shuttered in March last year.
