Port Jefferson shuts down parking meter program until spring

|

It’s that time of the year again, when Port Jefferson Village suspends its parking meter program until springtime.

From Monday, Dec. 3, until Thursday, March 14, village visitors can park freely park in municipal lots.

(Street parking is free year-round, though with time constraints.)

“We do this to encourage people to come to Port during the holidays and winter months when we are not as busy with the summer tourist and boaters,” Port Jeff Mayor Margot Garant told GreaterPortJeff.

Many downtown Port Jeff business owners, like Steve Muñoz of Amazing Olive, say the suspending of the meters helps the local economy during the winter.

“Customers can now shop and dine freely without worrying or forgetting to pay the meter,” said Muñoz, who also heads the Port Jefferson Retailer Association. “It’s great that the village does this, especially during the holiday season.”
