Update: Citing trouble over securing State Liquor Authority permits in time, the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 7 issued a statement saying its Oct. 17 pumpkin beer festival is cancelled.

Chamber leaders will be distributing flyers during that day’s regularly scheduled Fall Festival listing all the pumpkin beer and ciders being served in the local bars and restaurants along the festival route.

Prior Coverage: Plans are in the works to supplement the annual fall festival in Patchogue Village with a pumpkin beer festival.

The festival-within-a-festival idea was announced by the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce’s executive director David Kennedy during a Village Board meeting Monday evening.

“We would limit this to Long Island brewers only, to highlight their pumpkin beers,” Kennedy said.

The Chamber’s fall festival is planned for Oct. 17, from noon to 5 p.m. The craft beer component would run from 1 to 4 p.m. in the empty lot on the eastern side of the Bargain Bilge marine supply store on West Main Street, which is just west of the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center building.

That’s also where Blue Point Brewery held its live music and beer garden during the summer’s Alive After Five street festivals.

“It would be sectioned off, just like it was for Alive After Five,” Kennedy said. “There would be a separate admission to get in there. This wouldn’t be to the extent or the size of what Blue Point did.”

Mayor Paul Pontieri said he didn’t see the craft beer event being a problem.

“But I don’t want this fall festival to turn into Alive After Five,” he added.

Kennedy said that’s not the plan.

“That fall festival is a true, family event,” Kennedy said. “And the families love it. That’s why we have the Halloween costume parade and the pumpkin [decorating] and all that. We wouldn’t want to interfere with that whatsoever. This would be off to the street and off to the side, and still basically separate from the rest of the event.”

The fall festival also features free pumpkins for kids, corn roasting and a chile and chowder contest that entails people walking from restaurant to restaurant and voting for their favorite concoctions.

Kennedy will be updating the board with additional details as the event nears.
