Fire erupts in trailer behind Home Depot in Riverhead

A fire broke out in a trailer connected to the rear of Home Depot in Riverhead on Tuesday afternoon, drawing a response from multiple fire departments and Riverhead Town police.

The blaze was reported about 1 p.m. in a semi-trailer or storage trailer positioned at the loading docks behind the store. Firefighters responded to the scene and worked to contain the flames, which were extinguished within a couple of hours.

Firefighters from the Riverhead and Manorville fire departments were among those who responded to the fire. Riverhead Town police also confirmed they were at the scene.

Fire brought under control within hours

No injuries had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon. The fire forced the temporary closure of the store.

“The fire was pretty massive,” said an employee at ShopRite, which shares the same shopping plaza as Home Depot. “There were a lot Home Depot workers coming into our store.”

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and no additional information was available regarding the extent of the damage.
