It’s been three years in the making for Sal’s Farmers Market. But the wait is over. Sal’s swings its doors open today, Friday, in Bay Shore.
“It has been a long time coming,” said the market’s owner, Sal Messina. “I’m so totally excited to open.”
Messina, who previously owned the popular produce store Sal’s Fruit Tree in Copiague for over 40 years, purchased the space that formerly held Group Optical Center at 331 East Main Street back in 2016.
After hitting a series of delays, Messina is glad to finally open and share his products with the neighborhood.
“Bay Shore is going to get the super elite of fruit and vegetables; people are going to be ecstatic about the produce prices,” he said.
“And we’re going to have great service.”
In addition to produce, the near 3,600-square-foot market will also sell a variety of juices, smoothies and dairy products, as well as fresh flowers.
Messina is running his latest venture with his wife, Angela, and daughters Francesca and Arianna. They’ve also hired about 35 employees.
Sal’s Farmers Market offered a sneak peek Thursday night with family, friends and local business and elected leaders with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

hours of operation
Bay Shore’s new produce market will be open Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
