Former Suffolk County Police Commissioner Eugene Kelley, whose distinguished career spanned military service, law enforcement and legal practice, died on Sunday, Sept. 8. He was 96.

Kelley’s life was characterized by a commitment to public service that touched multiple communities across New York.

His journey began with service in the U.S. Marine Corps and continued with his eight years serving in the New York City Police Department, where he was as an officer and later a detective.

In 1967, Kelley, who was a lawyer, joined Suffolk’s police force as deputy commissioner. Within six years, he had ascended to become commissioner of the department, replacing John Barry. He held the position until 1977.

During his tenure, Kelley was known for his innovative approaches to law enforcement and community relations, Suffolk Police said.

Kelley, a longtime resident of Head of the Harbor, continued to serve the public after his time as commissioner, working in the Suffolk County Attorney’s Office and later in the district attorney’s offices of Queens and Brooklyn.

Kelley’s impact extended far beyond his professional achievements. He is survived by three children, Allison, Adrienne and Eugene “Buddy;” six grandchildren, Michael, Patrick, Alexander, Samuel, Ryan and Meera; and four great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife Eileen of 64 years.

The community can pay their respects during visitation hours on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at St. James Funeral Home, 829 Middle Country Road in St. James. Kelley will be laid to rest with full military honors on Friday, Sept. 13, in Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd. in Calverton.
