Silver Warriors: This 80-year-old’s commitment to the gym dates to 1985

GreaterBabylon is hitting the gyms and finding the toughest fitness buffs from our senior communities for a series called Silver Warriors.

In 1985 two things happened.

U.S. President Ronald Reagan was sworn into office for a second term.

And Babylon resident Marie Bohrer started working out at Fitness Incentive on Deer Park Avenue.

Over three decades and five different presidents later, Bohrer is still leaving her mark at the gym.

Every Monday through Friday, you can catch Bohrer working out for over an hour. Her warmups consist of at least two miles on the elliptical — unless it is core fusion day with Fitness Incentives’ Dina Voigt, of course.

“Exercising is good for my mind, my body, and my soul,” she says.

Bohrer even worked out religiously when she served full-time as a library clerk for Babylon Public Library for 30 years.

“When I don’t go [to the gym], I feel sluggish,” said Bohrer, who was born in Patchogue.

Even though she is retired,  she still finds other ways to keep busy when she’s not pumping iron.

“On the weekends if I get bored, I’ll hop on my bike and I’ll bike to [Belmont Lake State Park] and back, six-plus miles,” she says.

And her commitment doesn’t stop there.

When she is at home, she regularly walks around the neighborhood, while also maintaining her yard and garden by herself.

Her athleticism runs in the family too.

“My son Tom participated in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics (on the rowing team),” she said.

Now, Bohrer’s grandchildren look up to her.

“My granddaughters who are 22 and 23 say they want to be like me when they get older.”
