Small plane flips on landing at Calabro Airport in Shirley

|

A biplane flipped just after landing at Brookhaven Calabro Airport in Shirley at around 4 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

The pilot, Sean Martens, 40, of Garden City, was out of the aircraft and uninjured when the Mastic Fire Department arrived. Led by chief Rudy Sunderman, the department responded with three engines, the heavy rescue unit and fire police to the airport at 135 Dawn Drive.

Responders secured the plane, cut the fuel off to the engine and mitigated a minor fuel leak.

Mastic Ambulance Company stood by on scene during operations.

The FAA was notified and the scene was then turned over to the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal and the Suffolk County Police Department for investigation.

Police said in a statement that the plane was already on the ground when the aircraft overturned.
