It appears the hotly controversial proposal for a new South Country Ambulance headquarters is about to clear a major hurdle Thursday in Brookhaven Town Hall.
Meanwhile, a report addressing resident concerns over the proposal (see below) was released Wednesday and indicates nothing that was brought up should impede the $13 million proposal as of now.
Councilwoman Connie Kepert (D-Middle Island) said the board will likely give the OK for the project to proceed at its Thursday meeting — having determined it will make the area safer and is needed.
“The next step is really to approve the report and say yes, the South Country Ambulance needs a new facility, and for the financing, the amount we’re willing to expend,” she said.
The ambulance company then has to go through the process of getting its building plans approved with the Planning Board and building department.
“This is not voting on the site itself,” Kepert explained.
The proposal involves replacing the company’s existing building at Montauk Highway and North Dunton Avenue in East Patchogue with a larger and more modern building on Station Road, just south of Montauk Highway in Bellport.
The $13 million project would be paid for by district taxpayers, with interest, over 20 years.
