Southside Hospital’s high standards with heart attack treatment garner an illustrious award

|

Southside Hospital is the first Long Island hospital to earn the American Heart Association‘s Mission: Lifeline Gold Award for its severe heart attack care.

The feat is given to hospitals that show eight consecutive quarters of meeting the Mission: Lifeline criteria.

A key part of that criteria is to provide consistent and effective response treatment.

Southside’s work in treating patients suffering from a type of heart attack called ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction was an integral factor in winning the prestigious recognition.

The entire treatment process for that type of heart attack should not go past 90 minutes – from the patient’s arrival to artery un-blockage, according to the national guideline. Southside Hospital’s average is more than 30 percent better at 60 minutes.

Hospital executives said in prepared statement that their LifeNet system, which quickly disseminates important information from first responders to their cardiology team, is the reason for the exceptional treatment.

“This award is a recognition of the commitment of Southside Hospital’s cardiac and emergency medicine teams and local emergency medical services crews to do everything they can to ensure patients get the urgent care they need as fast as possible,” Donna Moravick, NP, executive director of Southside Hospital, said in the statement.

“People who are having a heart attack and being taken to Southside Hospital should rest assured that this team is very well equipped to get them lifesaving care quickly.”

Southside Hospital, part of Northwell Health, is growing their cardiac centers by adding more catheterization labs and a 17-bed recovery area.

The hospital has previously been recognized by The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association with a prestigious award for the hospital’s commitment to quality stroke care. The hospital earned the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award for adhering to 85 percent of AHA and ASA standards for two or more consecutive 12-month periods, as well as meeting 75 percent of the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality measures.
