Southwest, Icelandair team up for Iceland flights from Long Island

One morning you could be on Fire Island.

Later that day, you could be scaling volcanoes, taking selfies at geysers or dipping into the hot springs of Iceland.

That’s due to a new partnership between Southwest Airlines and Icelandair, which has announced combined trips from MacArthur Airport (ISP) to Reykjavík Airport (RKV), one of two major airports that serve Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavík.

The airlines will connect at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), MacArthur officials have confirmed.

A ceremonial signing took place between the carriers at the Ambassador of Iceland to the United States of America’s residence last month.

The first flight from MacArthur will be available Saturday, March 1, said a representative for the Town of Islip, which manages Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.

“We are thrilled to offer this exciting route to Reykjavik through Southwest Airline’s partnership with Iceland Air,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Iceland has become a popular destination for travelers and flying from MacArthur means you can begin your vacation immediately with our stress-free parking and short TSA lines.”

News 12 Long Island was the first to report on MacArthur’s involvement in the partnership, through which passengers will be able to book one itinerary that combines both airlines.

Bookings will at first go only through Icelandair, but in the future, Southwest will offer booking for interline travel through Southwest.com and other places where Southwest flights are offered, Southwest officials said.

“We’re excited to have the connectivity between Icelandair and Southwest as our partner. People should book their flights as soon as possible because I hear June is the best month to travel to Iceland,” stated Shelley LaRose Arken, MacArthur Airport’s commissioner of aviation.

“It’s fitting for us to launch this chapter of industry-standard airline partnerships with our longtime friends, Icelandair,” said Ryan Green, a Southwest executive, in a news release.

“Beyond an ability to offer each other’s customers access to new destinations and like-minded travel experiences centered around hospitality and value, we’re grateful to have been guided by their expertise and best practices in building our program.”
