They showed up for wings. They left with questions.
Now, some Smokey Bones customers are also left holding gift cards that can no longer be used, following the barbecue chain’s sudden nationwide shutdown earlier this week.
“Gift cards are no longer redeemable. If you hold a Smokey Bones gift card, you may be entitled to file a claim in the bankruptcy proceeding,” corporate representatives said in a statement.
Customers can submit a proof of claim through the company’s bankruptcy process. The deadline to file is May 15, 2026.
The update comes just days after Smokey Bones abruptly closed all of its locations, including its lone Long Island outpost in Ronkonkoma, just south of the Long Island Expressway.

The restaurant served its final customers Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, a sign posted outside read: “We regret to announce that this location has permanently closed its doors as of Tuesday, April 28. We thank our loyal Guests for many wonderful years.”
A manager on Long Island was seen discarding supplies inside the building as the closure unfolded, catching many locals off guard. Several customers even showed up for lunch while Greater Long Island was on scene.
“Wow… I can’t believe it,” said one hungry Long Islander. “I’ve been meaning to try this place for a long time.”
Bill, a Bohemia resident and regular, added: “I was just here last week. They would’ve told me if they knew. I’m friends with the staff.”
A company spokesperson confirmed the shutdown in an email.
“As of yesterday [April 28, 2026], all Smokey Bones locations have ceased operations,” said Erin Mandzik, senior director of corporate communications. “On behalf of Management, it has been a privilege to serve the Ronkonkoma community.”
The closure follows the January Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by parent company FAT Brands Inc., which acquired Smokey Bones in 2023.
According to reports, more than 30 locations across the country, including restaurants in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Rhode Island, were shuttered the same day.
The chain dates back to 1999, when its first location opened in Orlando.
