Family, friends to say goodbye to Shelter Island drowning victim Spencer Korwin

Family and friends will gather this weekend to remember Spencer Korwin, the 38-year-old triathlete-turned-wellness entrepreneur who drowned this week off the dock of the Pridwin Hotel on Shelter Island.

Korwin’s funeral service will be held Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1:30 p.m. at Temple Israel, 112 E. 75th St. in Manhattan. He will be buried afterward at Beth Moses Jewish Cemetery in West Babylon.

Korwin died Sept. 2 while swimming off the dock of the hotel where he was staying with his family during a Shelter Island vacation.

Shelter Island Police said he entered the water about 8 a.m. and was located by divers roughly seven hours later, underwater near the same dock. Police have labeled the drowning accidental and said no criminality is suspected. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office is still determining the official cause and manner of death, authorities said.

Korwin is survived by his wife, Carly, and their two young daughters, aged 4 and 1.

A former Team USA triathlete, Korwin competed at the 2012 World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, and collected podium finishes at races across the East End, including first-place showings at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Triathlon and the Mighty Montauk Sprint Triathlon.

A 2010 Syracuse University graduate, he founded Korwin Health & Wellness in 2021, building a career coaching athletes and everyday clients on sleep, diet and life balance while training in his own time for Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events.

Korwin was a familiar face in the Hamptons, where he was married on the beach in Bridgehampton. He was the grandson of Irving Korwin, a World War II veteran and founder of Wideband Coin Jewelry, who died in 2020.

Shiva will be observed at a private home in Mamaroneck on Monday, Sept. 7, and Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. minyan both evenings, and Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 9 to 11 a.m.
