Long Island appears to be getting its first Sprouts Farmers Market.
The Arizona-based supermarket chain is slated to take over the former LA Fitness location in Centereach, which closed on Jan. 28. Brookhaven Town Councilman Neil A. Manzella announced the news on Facebook Saturday morning.
“Through many discussions with the property owner and their representatives, I am excited to finally announce that a Sprouts Farmers Market will be joining our community,” he wrote. “Though personally unfamiliar with Sprouts, those who are have described it as a blend between Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.”
Greater Long Island reached out to Sprouts’ press team for more information about the new location.
Located at 1934 Middle Country Road, the building previously housed Waldbaum’s supermarket, which closed in 2010 following the chain’s bankruptcy. It later became an LA Fitness, which operated for over a decade before closing.
[LA Fitness only closed that specific location and continues to operate gyms in nearby Lake Grove, Port Jefferson Station, and Farmingville.]
Now, the space will once again serve as a supermarket.
Founded in 2002, Sprouts currently operates 430 stores with approximately 33,000 team members, according to the company’s website. The healthy food grocer has locations in 24 states, with the majority in California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Colorado. In the Northeast, there are five stores in Pennsylvania, mostly near Philadelphia, and three in New Jersey. There are currently no locations in New York.
In January, the chain — named Progressive Grocer’s Retailer of the Year — opened its first location of 2025, in St. Johns, Fla.
“Sprouts cultivates a culture and community of health,” said Christian Whitehurst, Commissioner for District 1 of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, at the opening. “From its farm-fresh produce and other healthy, affordable items in its stores to its Healthy Communities Foundation, Sprouts is growing knowledge and accessibility to healthy food choices.”
