A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the family of a Riverhead teen killed in a car crash Saturday night in Calverton.

The 16-year-old boy died after the Honda Civic he was driving east on Sound Avenue left the road and struck a tree near Horton Avenue about 9:22 p.m., police. The driver, identified in the GoFundMe effort as Ostin Portillo Perdomo, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“We are raising funds for the funeral expenses of my son Ostin, who passed away on Saturday … in a tragic accident,” the teen’s mother Sofia Portillo wrote in Spanish on the GoFundMe page. “We ask for your help, and may God greatly multiply your generosity.”

As of Monday morning, the fundraising campaign had collected more than $14,000 from 237 donations.

Riverheadlocal.com reported that Ostin was born in El Salvador and emigrated to the United States with his mother and younger sister when he was 7 years old.

Funeral services for Ostin are set for later this week Friday, Oct. 3, at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home, 336 Marcy Ave. in Riverhead.

Visitation is Friday, Oct. 3, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

The Riverhead Police Detective Squad, with assistance from the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, is continuing to investigate the crash.
