Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Post Office Cafe’s popular Race for MPS is going to look a bit different this year.
The Lessing’s Hospitality Group, which owns and operates the restaurant, will be having the event viritually Saturday, Oct. 17.
Like usual, all proceeds go to the nonprofit MPS Society. Last year, the race raised a whopping $36,000.
MPS, or Mucopolysaccharidoses, is an often-fatal genetic disease in children, which prevents the production of specific enzymes that help strengthen the body. Around 1 in 25,000 children are born with MPS or similar strands of the genetic disorder, according to the MPS Society.
“Virtual or not, it’s still the best day of the year knowing that our friends and family are running across the country,” said Mark Lessing, executive vice president of the Lessing’s Hospitality Group.
It’s a personal cause for Mark. He lost two children, Mark and Casey, to the disorder. They were a year apart in age. Mark died on Nov. 1, 2010, at 20 years old. Casey died on July 4, 2016, at 24 years old.
Participants will be raising money by running or walking around their neighborhood. Event organizers ask particpants to share photos by using the hashtag #pocafe2020 on social media.
